built from
history
In the 15th century the castle of Emborio (kasteli) was built by the Venetians. In medieval times it served as a defense structure and was inhabited permanently. It was expanded steadily and grew organically around its center using local materials like volcanic rocks and limestone.
culinary heritage
The islands cuisine has always been making use of the ingredients the volcanic soil had to offer. The dishes have been further developed and elevated into a new category of modern Greek cuisine that can be found in vibrant locations around the island.
Marvelous beaches
Throughout the centuries volcanic eruptions have created a big variety of beaches with sand in all kind of different colors and shapes. While the majority has black sand there are red and white beaches to be found and unique cliff formations to be explored.
World famous
sunset
When the day sets, the volcano is pitch-black while the shapes of the white washed houses pop out of the dark rock. In contrast, the sun paints the sky in orange, pink and blue colors while the sea creates an aquarelle version of them in its waves – a unique experience not to miss.
